On Tuesday, July 14, crews begin installing temporary traffic and pedestrian changes around the Dramatic Arts Building site at York and Crown Streets. These changes establish construction traffic configuration at the site, which stays in place for the duration of construction.
What to expect
Tuesday, July 14 (daytime): Starting at 8 a.m., crews are installing temporary signposts and signs along York and Crown Streets.
Wednesday, July 15 to Thursday, July 16 (overnight): Starting at 8 p.m. and finishing between 3 and 6 a.m., crews are shifting travel lanes. This work occurs in compliance with City of New Haven requirements and includes:
- Setting concrete barriers on York Street, then Crown.
- Mounting fence posts on the barriers.
- Striping new pavement markings. Existing markings are being covered, not ground off.
You may hear light drilling and construction vehicles during work hours. All vehicles use white-noise backup alarms, and crews intend to keep noise to a minimum.
Traffic during the overnight work
- Crown Street will be closed to through traffic between York and Park Streets. Local access will be maintained.
- York Street will be reduced to one lane. Brief full closures of 20 to 30 minutes may occur; during those closures, the New Haven Police Department will route traffic via Crown Street.
- Trucks will detour eastbound on George Street from York, north on Church Street, then west on Crown Street.
- The New Haven Police Department and the city’s Traffic Operations Center will manage all closures and detours.
Standing traffic pattern (after installation)
Once in place the following configuration remains through construction:
- York Street keeps two northbound lanes, shifted eastward.
- Crown Street is reduced to one westbound lane through the project frontage.
- Sidewalks directly along the site on York and Crown Streets close completely beginning the morning of Thursday, July 16. Pedestrians should use the sidewalk on the opposite side of each street, which remains open and provides an accessible route past the work zone.
- Metered parking along the site frontage will be bagged from July 15 for the duration of construction.
- Yale lots and garages are not affected.
What’s next
Future work, including utility connections and the tower crane setup and removal, require separate temporary traffic plans. That information will be shared ahead of time.
