Crews continue construction work for the new Dramatic Arts Building. The project is in its early stages, where contractors are excavating and shoring the site, and geothermal wells are being drilled to provide renewal energy to the future building. To address recent feedback while balancing the project schedule, there are a few milestones that the team is sharing in advance.
What to expect
Beginning August 31, primary work takes place Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. through this construction phase. Contractors may continue to work onsite after 6 p.m. to clean up, but this includes no drilling nor excavation. All work is weather dependent.
To address noise in the area, sound blankets around stationary equipment and the site fence were installed. Decibel readings are taken regularly around the jobsite perimeter, and the noise levels are consistently less than those required by the city.
During the week of September 14, roadwork commences, and the following activities take place. Flaggers will direct traffic for all roadwork.
- Relining the sewer begins from the intersections of Crown and York Streets to Crown and Park Streets through the Greater New Haven Water Pollution Control Authority. That portion of the road closes for one day. Resident-only traffic to the University Towers will be allowed to take a left on Crown from Park Street and use the Crown Street entrance during the closure.
- A sewer connection installation begins on Crown Street from the Dramatic Arts Building site. One lane on the road closes for three to five days.
- A storm water connection installation begins on York between the project site and 150 York Street Garage. Night work may take place from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. for three to five days to keep the road open during the day.
What this means for you
- Road access to University Towers from Crown and York Streets will be restored after work completion.
- Westbound travel lanes on Crown Street return to original configuration after work completion.
- Northbound travel lanes on York Street return to original configuration after work completion.
- Yale Lot 83 (341 Crown Street) availability will be updated separately.
What’s next
With the completion of this work phase, the Dramatic Arts Building project will continue to transition to other phases of development through 2030. The project team will continue to share periodic updates during the construction duration.
