This new academic building houses the Department of Economics and Tobin Center for Economic Policy at Yale. Its design increases connectivity between three adjacent buildings, including the first floor of 89 Trumbull Street, home to the Institute for Social and Policy Studies, and the first and second floors of 28 and 30 Hillhouse Avenue, which provide additional space for the Department of Economics and the Cowles Foundation for Research in Economics.

87 Trumbull Street comprises faculty offices, classrooms, lounge space, department staff offices, and support spaces. Along Hillhouse Avenue, there is an enclosed ground-level courtyard that provides additional outdoor program space.

The building is one of the first university facilities equipped with electric heat pumps used for both heating and cooling. Electrification is one of the key strategies to meet the university’s goal, led by Yale Planetary Solutions, to achieve net-zero emissions by 2035 and zero actual carbon emissions by 2050.

It also boasts a bird-deterrent system on its windows, which involves applying a patterned film on the glass. This solution was chosen in consultation with the Yale Bird-Friendly Building Initiative, which aims to accelerate the adoption of bird-friendly design on Yale’s campus and elsewhere.

To make room for this new building, relocation of an existing historic building at 87 Trumbull was required. This wood-framed building now sits on a new foundation at 85 Trumbull Street.
