The Upper Science Hill Development (USHD) continues to make progress on the overall project and is reaching another milestone, razing the Pierson-Sage Parking Garage. Since Yale’s notice in December 2024, the berm surrounding the garage was removed and the project team is preparing to demolish the garage, which closes on Monday, June 2, 2025.
The closure allows for the site and building preparations to occur in June 2025 leading up to the actual demolition beginning in July 2025. Work will start at the eastern section of the garage and progress westward until it is complete in the fall of 2025.
The two main construction vehicle gates on Edwards Street that were used for the berm removal will remain in place and be used for hauling away the concrete and other building materials. An additional alternate gate could be used intermittently.
Work will take place Monday through Friday during regular working hours between 7:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. and may occasionally extend beyond these hours, if necessary. The project team will make sure that this work remains in compliance with all city noise ordinances.
Considering campus life and our community
Minimizing disruptions to campus life and the surrounding community during construction continues to be a top priority for the USHD project team. Pedestrians may occasionally be redirected along the Edwards Street sidewalk while trucks enter and exit the site, but the overall impact to sidewalks along Edwards Street throughout the demolition process will be minimal.
The existing bus stop, blue phone, and sidewalk on the Whitney Avenue side of the work area will remain active and accessible throughout the project.
Because truck traffic will increase in the area during this work, a city-approved haul route to and from the work area will continue to manage truck traffic. Security guards will also be placed at the gates to direct truck traffic and support pedestrian and cyclist safety.
Future steps
After the garage has been removed, part of the ongoing geothermal borehole project will move north to this area and begin in the fall of 2025. Upon completion of the geothermal work in the spring of 2026, the existing entry and exit gates will support truck traffic during phase two of USHD construction through the spring of 2030.
For parking permit holders
As Pierson-Sage Parking Garage is scheduled to go offline on June 2, 2025, permit holders have been notified by Yale Parking. Everyone with a primary parking assignment in this garage has been offered an alternative parking assignment. Please direct any parking-related questions to parking@yale.edu.
